After losing everything, Michel de Montaigne turned inward, and changed how we think forever.
French thinker Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) is widely credited with inventing the essay as a new literary genre. By publishing his Essais in 1580, he created a new, informal, and personal form of writing designed to explore his own thoughts, experiences, and limitations rather than providing a formal treatise.
That simple shift created the essay: a space where doubt, contradiction, and honesty could coexist.
