The Divine Comedy; Hell - As Virgil and Dante wait for heavenly aid to enter the city of Dis, they encounter the gruesome Furies and the threat of Medusa, which could petrify Dante. Virgil protects him, urging him to discern the symbolic meanings of their journey. A heavenly messenger arrives, scolding the fallen angels guarding the gate for their insolence, and effortlessly opens the gate. Inside, they find a desolate place filled with open tombs, housing arch-heretics, and their followers, engulfed in varying degrees of flame, their moans echoing with anguish. Dante learns more about these damned souls as they venture deeper.
