The Divine Comedy; Hell - Dante and Virgil cross the Stygian lake with the boatman, Phlegyas. They encounter Filippo Argenti, an angry soul, whom Dante is glad to see tormented. They then approach the city of Dis, illuminated by eternal flames. Denied entry by fallen angels, Dante is terrified, but Virgil reassures him they will be allowed to enter and move onwards in their journey. Virgil leaves Dante momentarily to negotiate with the fallen angels, but is denied entry. He returns to Dante, upset but determined, telling him that someone powerful is coming to help them enter the city despite the fallen angels' resistance.
