The Divine Comedy; Hell - In the fourth circle of Hell, Dante and Virgil encounter Plutus, but Virgil's words make the beast crumble. They find souls pushing weights, representing the sins of hoarding and squandering. When they clash, they accuse each other of their sins. Virgil explains these souls are unrecognizable due to their degraded lives. Dante inquires about the nature of fortune and wealth. Virgil describes Fortune as a divine force, governing earthly goods and changing them capriciously. They then approach the Stygian lake, seeing souls trapped in its murky depths, tormented for their anger. Their journey continues along the swamp, ending at a dark tower.
