The Divine Comedy; Hell - A continuous, chilling rain punishes the gluttonous souls in Hell's third circle. The beast Cerberus guards this realm, attacking and tearing at the damned. The guide, Virgil, distracts Cerberus with muddy earth, allowing them to proceed. Amidst the suffering souls, they encounter Ciacco, a former resident of Dante's city, now punished for his gluttony. Ciacco laments the city's internal conflicts and foretells future strife. He also mentions several souls dwelling deeper in Hell. As they move forward, discussing the nuances of the afterlife, they approach a descent guarded by the formidable Plutus.
