The Divine Comedy; Hell - As darkness sets in, Dante hesitates to embark on the perilous journey ahead. Voicing his fears, he questions his worthiness compared to great men like Aeneas and Paul, who previously undertook such quests. Virgil, his guide, relays a heavenly intervention: the radiant Beatrice, motivated by love and concern for Dante, had implored Virgil to help him. She was prompted by a compassionate woman in Heaven and Lucia. Hearing of their care and the urgency of Beatrice's plea, all of Dante's doubts vanish. With renewed vigor, he entrusts his journey to Virgil, and they venture into the dense forest.
