The Divine Comedy; Hell - In the middle of his life, Dante becomes lost in a foreboding forest, which fills him with intense fear and despair. Upon reaching the foot of a mountain, he finds hope when he sees its peak illuminated. However, a series of fierce animals, including a panther, lion, and she-wolf, block his way. Just as he despairs, a figure appears and reveals himself as the ancient Roman poet Virgil. Virgil tells Dante that he cannot climb the mountain due to the beasts, especially the she-wolf. Instead, Virgil offers to guide him through an eternal place of tormented souls, leading him eventually toward paradise, but notes that another spirit will have to guide him to heaven. Gratefully, Dante agrees to follow Virgil.
